For Darren O'Malley, returning to education was a leap of faith that would ultimately transform both his confidence and his career. After experiencing difficulties in secondary school and struggling with self-belief, he chose to pursue the BSc in Applied Psychology at IADT through the PLC route, a decision that would prove life-changing.

"IADT was instrumental to my personal and professional development," Darren reflects. "Returning to education after a challenging experience in school, I wasn't always confident in my abilities. The opportunity to enter through the PLC route gave me the chance to start again and realise my potential."

One of the aspects of the programme that had the greatest impact on Darren was its emphasis on continuous assessment. Having previously found traditional examinations discouraging, this approach provided a more supportive learning environment and allowed him to thrive academically.

The intimate, student-centred nature of IADT also played a key role in his success. The close-knit campus community helped him stay motivated, engaged, and focused throughout his studies, ultimately leading to the achievement of a First-Class Honours degree.

A highlight of Darren's academic journey was his final year thesis, which explored the gendered dimensions of the Dunning-Krueger effect. The project represented the culmination of four years of learning and was made possible through the guidance of his supervisor, Dr Nicola Fox Hamilton, alongside the knowledge and research skills he developed during his time at IADT.

Throughout the programme, Darren gained a deeper understanding of psychology from a variety of perspectives, exploring both its history and its practical applications. He was particularly inspired by the role psychology can play in driving positive social change through evidence-based research and by the field's ongoing commitment to growth and improvement.

Beyond academic knowledge, the degree provided Darren with a set of transferable skills that continue to shape his professional life today.

"The most important skills I developed were critical thinking, self-reflection, and information evaluation," he says. "These skills have become cornerstones of my career."

Those foundations guided Darren towards a Master's in Library and Information Studies, where he discovered a career path that perfectly aligned with his interests and strengths. Today, he is proud to be pursuing a career in librarianship, helping others connect with knowledge and information.

Looking back, Darren credits IADT with opening the door to opportunities he never imagined possible.

"I am forever grateful to my lecturers, the friends I've made, and the excellent programme that had such a positive impact on my life. My time at IADT gave me the confidence, skills, and direction to build a future I'm proud of."

Darren's story is a powerful reminder that educational journeys are rarely linear. With the right support, environment, and determination, challenges can be transformed into achievements, and new pathways can lead to fulfilling careers and lasting success.
